How Long Should Family Devotions Be?

I picked up a devotional book a few years back — well-reviewed, good author, solid content. The first night, we sat down and I started reading. About 12 minutes in, my son was staring at the ceiling. By minute 18, he'd given up entirely and rolled toward the wall. We finished. Barely. And neither one of us wanted to do it again the next night.

  • Reading: 3–4 minutes
  • Question or discussion: 1–2 minutes
  • Short prayer: 30–60 seconds

Total: under 7 minutes, most nights. Maybe 8 or 9 on a night when your kid really gets into the conversation. That's a win, not a problem.

This isn't me telling you to do less because it's easier. This is me telling you what actually works — what your kids' brains and attention spans will actually absorb at the end of the day.

What Research Says About Kids' Attention Spans at Bedtime

Here's the thing about bedtime: your kid's brain is winding down. That's actually a feature, not a bug — they're more emotionally receptive and more likely to retain what they hear as they transition to sleep. But "more receptive" and "able to sit still for 20 minutes" are very different things.

Children's focused attention spans vary a lot by age. The general guideline from child development research is about 2–5 minutes of sustained focus per year of age. That means a 7-year-old has a realistic attention window of somewhere around 14–35 minutes — but that's during peak hours, not at 8:30 p.m. when they're already yawning.

At bedtime, cut that estimate in half. Your kid is running on fumes. You're competing with the pillow. The goal isn't endurance — it's connection. And connection happens fast, or it doesn't happen at all.

Why Shorter Devotions Are More Powerful, Not Less

Think about the conversations that have actually stayed with your kid. Were they 20-minute lectures? Or were they quick, specific moments — something you said at dinner, a question you asked in the car, a sentence before you turned out the light?

How Long Is Too Long?

Any devotional that takes more than 10 minutes to complete — including prayer — is too long for a bedtime routine with young kids. Full stop.

That doesn't mean you can't do longer content occasionally, or that some nights you won't go longer because the conversation took off. But if the baseline is 15 minutes, you're going to burn out within a few weeks. You can feel it happening — the drag, the resistance, the nights you skip because you just don't have it in you to go that long.

The rule still applies: keep the structured reading short. Build the relationship, and let the conversation run as long as it's going somewhere real.

The goal here isn't a perfect devotional. It's a consistent one. And consistency lives or dies on friction — how hard is it to start, and how bad does it feel when it runs long?

A 5-minute devotional has almost no friction. You grab it, you read it, you're done. Your kid feels good about completing it. You feel good about showing up. That's the loop you're trying to build.
